We call it “rearing.” If the rearing is successful, it results in that perfection of femininity known as a lady. The sweetening process that feminists call “socialization” is simply a less intense version of what goes on in every Southern family. ![]() If you wish to understand the American woman, study the Southern woman. There is most assuredly a California girl, but if anyone spoke of a California lady, even Phil Donahue and Alan Alda would laugh. There is a Midwestern farm wife but not a Midwestern lady. ![]() ![]() There is a New England old maid but not a New England lady. THERE are ladies everywhere, but they enjoy generic recognition only in the South. ![]() ![]() The house did not have electricity or running water for the first few years. When Cheryl was 12 her mother married Glenn Lambrecht, and the following year the family moved to rural Aitkin County, where they lived in a house that they had built themselves on 40 acres. I loved watching Adrian and Nova grow as individuals and a team, alongside the rest of the Renegades and Anarchists. Every character, including many of the side characters, receive additional development that helps them to become authentic and refreshing. Once again, I love the cast of characters in this series. The power dynamics in this story are captivating and complex, and I’m desperate for more. ![]() I really love the direction Marissa Meyer has taken with the second installment in terms of how superheroes are viewed and how supervillains are treated. Morals are questioned, friends become suspects, and tensions are higher than ever. Conflict goes far beyond what we already know of the Renegades’ power and the Anarchists’ will for vengeance. I cannot get enough of the politics of this world. Renegades was already a fantastically constructed world, but Archenemies breaks the boundaries for what we know of Gatlon City. ![]() Stay tuned for my spoiler-filled video review! ![]() |
